Frequently Asked Questions
What is Melbourne Open House?
MOH is an annual free event which gives Melburnians and visitors to the city a rare opportunity to discover the hidden wealth of design, architectural, engineering and historic gems nestled in our city. MOH has evolved since 2008 to include a Speaker Series as well as competitions, tours and the Children’s Program.
What buildings are open during the event?
75 buildings are open this year – check out the full list when launched on the 23 June.
How can I secure a MOH program?
You can purchase a program online via our secure ordering system. Also, on event days, programs will be sold for $8 at select locations around the city, and as well as the MOH Information Hub in the city square (corner of Collins and Swanston streets). Programs will also be available for sale at the City Square Information Hub on Saturday July 30 and Sunday July 31 from 10am to 4pm. Programs are also available for purchase at Federation Square Visitor Centre and the Metlink office at the Melbourne Town Hall from July 20th
Can I pre-book or reserve my tour to secure access to MOH buildings?
For 2011, pre-bookings were taken for a number of buildings that are particularly small and have restrictions on the amount of people that can fit in the space at one time. For all of the other buildings visitors will be admitted on a first come, first served basis. You are able to sign up at some of the buildings when they open for tours for specific tour times. Buildings that are expected to be busy have been indicated by the ‘Lines expected, arrive early’ symbol in the MOH program.
What hours will MOH operate?
MOH will operate from 10am to 4pm on both Saturday July 30 and Sunday July 31. Some buildings are only open for limited days and/or hours. Refer to the details on each building for confirmation.
Is MOH occurring for the whole weekend?
Yes. In 2011 MOH is running the whole weekend of July 30 and 31. Check the program for opening times of all of the buildings.

Absolutely! A few buildings do have age restrictions (no children under 14 allowed) so please check the description for each building. Any restrictions are highlighted on the building page on our website and Program – you’ll find this information just above the list of symbols. Our Children’s Program gives children an opportunity to discover and enjoy the best of the program.
How does MOH select the buildings involved?
Melbourne Open House seeks to celebrate significant aspects of the built fabric of our city. We showcase seminal buildings from the past and present, and introduce the possibilities of the future. Melbourne has always been a city of opportunity, a home of innovation and enterprise. MOH gives the public the an experience of a selection of buildings and spaces that help make Melbourne the city it is.
Am I allowed to photograph or record inside the buildings?
Mostly yes, however check the description of each building for any restrictions. We are running the Focus On MOH photography competition so please bring your camera.
Is there disabled access?
Unfortunately a few of the buildings do not have disabled access. Please check for the Disabled Access symbol noted on each building in the Program or on our website.
How long has MOH been running?
2011 is our fourth year.
Is there a limit to how many people can go into the buildings?
Some buildings limit patrons based on their maximum tour group size. All buildings with the ‘Guided Tour’ symbol will have a limit per tour. Some buildings (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Federation Square) have very limited tour sizes and will operate on a booking system. For tour only buildings, you’ll either need to book your tour via the online booking system or at the building in the morning.
Check the program page for details.
Is parking available at each building?
No. There is no special parking for Melbourne Open House. There will be limited parking available in the city. We suggest you take public transport, walk or ride your bike. The closest tram stop and route is included in each building description provided in the program and on our website.

How long will I have to wait to enter a building?
Wait times will vary depending upon the building and the patronage. In 2010, some patrons waited over two hours to enter the ANZ Gothic Bank, with the vast majority claiming it was well worth it! Check for buildings with the Lines Expected Arrive Early symbol in our program.
What should I bring with me?
With 75 fabulous buildings open you won’t be able to see them all – so pick up the MOH Program and begin planning. And make sure you pack for Melbourne’s weather, especially if you are planning on queuing! We recommend a warm jacket and an umbrella. And don’t forget your camera!
